Radio Sanremo History

Radio Sanremo was established on October 28, 1939, amid the era governed by the Ente Italiano per le Audizioni Radiofoniche (EIAR), marking an ambitious venture into the burgeoning world of radio broadcasting. However, the local station's journey was abruptly interrupted as it ceased operations shortly thereafter, a direct consequence of the tumultuous wartime events that swept across the nation, leaving a silence where there had once been a burgeoning voice of the community.

In the aftermath of the war, amidst a landscape scarred yet resilient, the local facility found a new lease on life as it resumed operations on medium wave frequencies. This revival, however, did not bring back the original Radio Sanremo. Instead, the facility emerged not as a standalone entity but as a vital cog in the wider network of Rai1, serving as one of its repeaters. This transition marked a significant shift from its original identity and purpose, embedding it within a larger national framework of broadcasting. This phase of operation continued well into the 1990s, showcasing a remarkable journey of transformation and adaptation, from its humble beginnings to becoming an integral part of Italy’s premier broadcasting network.

The FM Era

The year 1976 marked a pivotal moment with the deregulation of the airwaves, a move affirmed by the Constitutional Court, leading to an explosion of free radio stations and the spread of local FM broadcasting. Against this backdrop, in the spring of the same year, Radio Sanremo made a triumphant return to the airwaves, propelled by the enthusiasm of a group of aficionados. They reclaimed the station’s original name to provide a lineup steeped in culture, local news, and sophisticated music, mirroring the path of Club Tenco, established during those years.
